Indians pound Bulldogs, 9-1

It didn’t take very long for the Wauseon girls soccer team to get going on offense in its season opener with Rossford.

As a matter of fact – it took all of 76 seconds.

Jaydelin Vasvery pumped in two goals in the first five minutes of the game, and that carried the Indians as they thumped visiting Rossford 9-1 to kick off the season Friday at the Wauseon soccer complex.

“We did some things well and that was encouraging to see this early in the season,” Wauseon coach Brandon Schroeder said after the win. “One of the things we are working on is taking advantage of opportunities.”

Vasvery, who finished with five goals in the game, was credited for a goal off a Rossford defender into the net, then stayed onside on a pass from Kyrin Grime and found the back of the net for a 2-0 score with 35:16 left in the half.

“That’s something we maybe haven’t done as much of in the past,” Schroeder said of taking the early lead. “This way, we can dictate the tempo the rest of the game.”

The game stayed that way until Rossford’s Hannah Pierce outran the Wauseon defense and deposited a goal with 26:55 left in the half.

That was answered 10 minutes later when Avery Giguere blasted in a shot from the top of the box.

Vasvery and Giguere each added another goal in the final 11 and a half minutes of the half to put the Indians ahead 5-1 at the break.

“We returned a lot of talent in the middle (of the field),” stated Schroeder. “We know a lot of production will come through there. We’ll lean on them when we have to.”

Vasvery outraced the Rossford defense, plus Mya Suarez and Giguere all tacked on goals in the second half to make the final 9-1.

Wauseon (1-0) opens NWOAL play Thursday at Bryan.
