Much talent returns for Wauseon girls soccer

Wauseon girls soccer is hoping to build off last year’s success which saw them finish 11-6-1 on the season and claim a sectional title. The Indians fell 8-0 to Lake in the Division II district semifinal to end their season.

“We will field a competitive team with aspirations to contend for the league and return to the district tournament,” said head coach Brandon Schroeder.

They return a pair of NWOAL all-league first teamers, Jaydelin Vasvery and Avery Giguere. Additionally, Vasvery was first team all-district in Division II while Giguere was second team all-district.

Other key returnees are goalkeeper Hannah Spadafore, Daisy Giguere, and Mya Suarez who were each honorable mention All-NWOAL. Also back are Kendra Gorczyca, Jessica Perez, Briley Rupp, Amanda Wendt, Kyrin Grime, Anna Koenig and Alex Gray.

However, the Indians will have to go without seven players from last year’s team that graduated. Among those were Torri Bost and Amanda Hammontree who both made second team All-NWOAL and honorable mention all-district in 2016. Also gone are Taylar Held, Beth Yackee, Kate Precht, Timber Kreiner and Taylor Benschoter.

“Graduated seven seniors left us with a young squad that will have to grow up quickly,” said Schroeder on the weaknesses of his team.

Looking to help with the depth of the roster are newcomers Rylee Campbell, Audrey Leininger, Serena Pratt and Samantha Knauer.

Strengths for the Indians, according to Schroeder, are their returning starters in the midfield and an experienced goalie in Spadafore.

Although Swanton has won the last two NWOAL championships, the Indians’ coach sees the league being more well-rounded this year.

“The NWOAL looks to be a very competitive race this year,” said Schroeder. “Most teams return some quality minutes across the field and we could see more parity develop.”

Wauseon hosts Rossford Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the first game of a girls and boys doubleheader with the Bulldogs.
