Senior leadership a strength for Indians

The Wauseon volleyball team has a bevy of upperclassmen returning, including five seniors, which should help them have a successful season in 2017.

Head coach Bill Blanchong is entering his fourth year at the school, in which he has accumulated a 49-45 record in that span. The Indians were 12-11 last season and bowed out in the sectional tournament.

Blanchong highlights his seven returning letter winners, good team chemistry, skilled players back at key positions, and senior leadership as strengths for his team this season.

Back for the Indians are Lexi Sauber (honorable mention All-NWOAL, first team District 7), Karli Penrod (honorable mention All-NWOAL, honorable mention District 7), Chloe Lane (honorable mention All-NWOAL), Maddie Trejo (honorable mention District 7), Maddy Martinez, Jen Sanders and Reagan Spadafore.

They did lose honorable mention District 7 performer Carys Grime to graduation, as well as Faith Weber and Audry Lane.

Blanchong’s hope for the season is that they compete every night. He says they should finish in the top half of the NWOAL, and they have a chance at a league title if they play well.

“Tough schedule early, (we) need to be ready to go,” the coach said of his team’s weaknesses for the season.

Newcomers for the Indians are Sydney Zirkle and Kelcy Blanchong.

Winning the league will be a challenge this season.

“Based on summer league, Swanton looks tough,” said coach Blanchong. “Every league opponent will give us a good match.”

Wauseon hosts Defiance next Tuesday to kick off the regular season.
