Viking golf looks to improve

Although it may be tough for them to finish in the top half of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League standings this year, the Evergreen golf team has positive feelings about the season.

“(We) should be competitive in many regular season matches and improve average scores from last season,” said head coach Doug DeSloover.

Returning for the Vikings are Travis Mersing, Kaleb Lumbrezer, Zach Lumbrezer, Noah Kreuz and Cade Johnson. However, they will have to replace departed letter winners Nick Hudik, Evan Conrad and Kayla Miller.

Strengths for the season according to DeSloover, are great senior leadership and healthy competition for varsity slots.

“Travis Mersing should have a strong junior season,” the coach added.

The Vikings are also adding newcomers Aaron Miller, Garrett Betz, and CJ Langenderfer.

DeSloover and his team are aware of the challenges the NWOAL schedule poses in 2017.

“Will be uphill battle with strong teams at the top, but (we) should improve on last year’s finish,” he said of the league race.

Evergreen has had three matches so far, but their first home match is today against Lake at Spuyten Duyval. Golfers will tee off at 4 p.m.
