After dropping into the consolation bracket in the District 3 ACME baseball sectional at Wauseon, Evergreen used an efficient 75-pitch complete game performance from Bryce Eisel to knock Liberty Center out of the tournament with a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon.
Eisel did not walk a batter and scattered seven hits, giving up only a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of errors on the same play.
The Vikings jumped on Tiger starter Lucas Frankforther in the first when Mason Henricks led off with a single, John Ruth walked, then Josh Dowling and Sam Lubinski followed with run-scoring singles to give Evergreen a 2-0 lead.
Evergreen tacked on three more in the third when Ruth bunted for a hit and after a wild pitch, Dowling lined his second RBI single to left to make it 3-0.
After two were out, Jack Krispin’s second hit of the game put Vikings on first and second and both scored on Adam Baumgartner’s ringing double up the right center field gap.
The Vikes final tally came in the sixth when Baumgartner and Dave Moore singled and Baumgartner scored on a wild pitch.
However, Evergreen was defeated by Wauseon 13-4 on Sunday which eliminated them from the tournament.
Delta bests Napoleon
In the winner’s bracket final that followed Saturday, Delta spotted Napoleon a 2-0 deficit and despite having only two hits leave the infield, came from behind using nine walks, three hit batters and four Wildcat errors to take a 6-4 win.
Napoleon scored in the first off Travis Dunning with Landon Willeman’s double and a Caleb Franz RBI single, and added a run in the third when Jarrett Goldeman singled, stole second and scored on Dylan Unverferth’s base hit.
Delta caught the Cats in the top of the fourth, thanks to some huge Napoleon generosity.
Tristan Saeger’s pop fly on the infield was lost in the sun for a hit to start the inning and consecutive errors loaded the bases.
Saeger got caught in no-man’s land when Colin Rouleau botched a squeeze bunt, but during the ensuing rundown, Goldeman stepped too far up the third base line after throwing behind Saeger and a Wildcat didn’t replace behind him allowing Saeger to score.
After Rouleau sacrificed and Hunter Hamilton walked, Gabe Freeman’s force out grounder plated a second run to tie the game.
A walk, Zack Rosebrook’s single, a hit batter, and a bases loaded walk to Mitch Kruse put Napoleon back up 3-2 in the bottom of the inning but Delta came back in the top of the fifth when Saeger’s fake bunt slap up the middle scored Jason Beverly who had walked and moved up on a wild pitch.
Again Napoleon reclaimed a lead in the bottom of the frame when Willeman was plunked with a pitch, Franz singled, and a pair of force plays brought home the go ahead run.
Delta forged a tie in the top of the sixth when Cole Mattin walked, stole second and rode home on Beverly’s double to left center.
The Panthers finally took the lead for good in the seventh when Logan Echler was hit by a pitch, Dunning walked, Rouleau’s sacrifice was misplayed into a hit and a passed ball scored the lead run before another walk and hit batter scored an insurance run.
Dunning hit the leadoff batter opening the bottom of the seventh but Mattin’s grab of a line drive and throw to first for a double play on Dunning’s last of 125 pitches all but extinguished the threat. Rob Arrendondo then induced a ground out on the next hitter for the save.
Napoleon then got by Wauseon in the consolation bracket, setting up a rematch with the Panthers which will be played today at 6 p.m.
Results from the rest of the District 3 sectional tournament can be found in the Thursday edition of the Expositor.
