Pettisville allowed 13 Hilltop hits, and the Cadets managed multiple runs in each inning as they defeated the Blackbirds 14-2 in five innings in a Buckeye Border Conference baseball game Saturday morning.
The big blow was a five run second inning for Hilltop to garner a 7-0 lead.
Steven Riley singled and stole second to begin the top of the second. He then came home two batters later when Quinn Smith got a base hit. After a ground out for the second out of the frame, Christian McKinney’s RBI single plated Smith to make it 4-0.
The Cadets then got a bloop hit off the bat of Jack Blaisdell, scoring McKinney to give them a five run cushion. Blaisdell scored all the way from first on Ryan Brooker’s knock, and when the relay throw to third went into the Blackbird dugout, Brooker was awarded home plate for a 7-0 Cadet lead.
Pettisville would use four different pitchers in the contest with Logan Rufenacht taking the loss. He went 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The Cadets got another opportunity in the top of the third when Riley drew a one-out walk and stole second. Andrew Denton then cashed in with an RBI double to left.
Two batters later, Jacob Champion belted an RBI single to make it 9-0 heading into the home half of the third.
The Blackbirds would manufacture a run during their at bat, starting with a John Rufenacht walk and Christian Stevens’ sacrifice bunt. John Rufenacht advanced to third after a wild pitch from Champion, allowing him to score on a ground ball hit by Justin Rupp.
With two outs and a pair of runners on base in the top of the fourth, Hilltop dented the scoreboard with an infield single from Riley. In fact, it scored both runners when the throw elluded the first baseman, making the score 11-1.
Denton followed with an RBI double which made the score 12-1, but he was thrown out trying to get to third for the final out of the inning.
With one out and runners on second and third in the next half inning, Logan Rufenacht’s ground out plated Dillon King for Pettisville’s second and final run of the contest. Hilltop added RBIs by Baiden Jones and Brayden Gorsuch in the top of the fifth to complete the scoring.
Champion pitched all five innings to get the win for the Cadets. He allowed two Blackbird hits, while striking out a pair to only one walk.
However, on Thursday, Pettisville won at North Central 10-0 in six innings.
Christian Stevens went 1 for 3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs for the Blackbirds. Dillon King added a pair of RBIs.
Austin Horning got the win on the mound, going all six innings, allowing only three hits and striking out six. Josh Bailey took the loss for North Central.
