Viking golf looks to gain valuable experience

With six letter winners gone to graduation, the Evergreen golf team hopes they can rebuild their roster up this season. It is the Vikings’ goal to gain valuable varsity experience for their younger players.

Letter winners lost that the Vikings and coach Doug DeSloover look to replace are Brandon Krempec (honorable mention All-NWOAL), Landon Lumbrezer, Jacob Betz, Alex Sullivan, Kyle Condon and Nate Herr.

However, they do return a pair of letter winners in juniors Nick Hudik and Evan Conrad. DeSloover also has newcomers Kayla Miller, Shane Call, Kaleb Lumbrezer and Travis Mersing to help add depth to the roster.

The second-year coach likes the fact that he has young players in leadership positions, as it gives the underclassmen all the opportunities they need to get better.

But, that inexperience coupled with a road-heavy schedule, it is likely the Vikings may suffer a few lumps along the way. They hope to improve upon last year’s 6-16 season. The rigorous NWOAL schedule could also pose some problems.

“(It) Will be an uphill battle for such a young team to compete in a strong NWOAL field,” said DeSloover on his outlook of the league.

Evergreen, whose season is already underway, travels to Toledo Christian for a match on Aug. 27.
