TOLEDO – After a rousing double-overtime sectional final win over Ottawa Hills, Swanton’s season ended at the hands of a deep and athletic Eastwood team, 58-42, at Toledo Central Catholic in the semifinal of the Division III District.
Thanks to Zach Dziengelewski’s play inside, Swanton forged an 11-7 lead deep into the first quarter as the BGSU-bound offensive lineman used his girth around the rim to socre 9 of those 11 Bulldog points.
However, Eastwood had answers from their seemingly never-ending list of juniors as Zach Hirzel hit a floater, Dalton Andrews got inside for a three-point play and Zach Henline scored on a back door lob to give the Eagles a 14-11 lead at the quarter.
The Eagles continued to extend their lead as Logan Frobose took a feed from Tyler Haas for a score, making it 28-18 with 3:23 left in the half.
Dziengelewski again scored out of the post and Duyane Goings’ fallaway jumper got Swanton within five at 28-23 heading into the locker room.
Frobose countered those five with six of his own on a pair of triples in the first minute of the second half that sparked a 13-1 run to boost the Eagles to a 41-24 lead.
This time it was Cade Boos and Hirzel doing the damage with their quickness, getting in the paint four more times between them to make that 17 point lead grow to 51-28 by the end of the third, and to 56-32 halfway through the fourth.
Swanton answered with a 10-0 burst as Gunnar Oakes and Garrett Chandler hit three-pointers to tighten the score in the last four minutes.
Eastwood shot a blazing 24 for 42 from the floor while the Bulldogs were 15 for 41.
The battle of the boards ended even at 22.
Dziengelewski led the Bulldogs with 15 points and Oakes had 11.
Eastwood was led by Frobose who had 12, and Andrews who came off the bench for 10.
Swanton ends their season at 12-13, after winning their third straight Division III sectional title.
