TOLEDO – The county will once again be well represented at the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament as a total of eight wrestlers advanced out of the Division III district tournament at Waite over the weekend.
Swanton placed fourth as a team with 86 points. Delta also placed in the top 10 at sixth with 70.5 points, while Archbold took 11th with 51.5 points.
Advancing to state for the Bulldogs were Chase Moore at 145 pounds, Crew Oberheim at 195 pounds, and Tommy Lytle at 285 pounds.
Moore placed fourth at 145 pounds, opening with a 17-1 technical fall victory over D.J. Stone of Willard. He dropped his second match to Wayne Frey of Riverdale, rebounded with a pin of Gibsonburg’s Jonathon Auld, defeated Elmwood’s Dalton Merritt 20-4 and Tyler Ludwig of Van Buren 6-2 to reach the third place match.
In the battle for third, Moore lost to Alex Neuberger of Milan Edison by a 4-2 decision.
Oberheim finished fourth in his weight class as he was pinned by Dylan Hinton of Elmwood in the third place match. He opened with an 8-4 win against Galion’s Noah Grochowalski, lost to eventual champion Sam Stoll of Edison by pin, defeated New London’s Adonn Kruki 12-9, edged Ayersville’s Dakota Schweitzer and pinned Joseph Shirley of Tiffin Calvert.
At 285 pounds, Lytle fell by pin to Galion’s Mason Weldon in the third place match.
Lytle earned a pair of pins to begin his run but dropped a 6-5 decision to Edison’s Joe Moore in the semifinal match. He secured a spot to state with a 2-1 ultimate tie breaker against Jacob Huber of Margaretta.
Placing but not advancing for Swanton were Zach Schaller (106) and Dylan Cook (126) who took sixth, and Trevor Schaller (120) who placed fifth.
Qualifying for Archbold were Gavin Grime (132) and Noah Mattin (138).
Grime began with a 5-1 win over David Patterson of North Baltimore, defeated Mohawk’s Daniel Price by an ultimate tie breaker, lost 3-1 to eventual champion Trevor Scherf of Oak Harbor, bested Max Wolfe of Edison 9-5 and defeated Fairview’s Reilly Heater to finish third.
Noah Mattin also took third with a 5-0 victory against J.D. McNett of Otsego.
He also earned a pin over Kaden Keegan of Margaretta, a technical fall against Lakota’s Brenden Biddle, was defeated by Edison’s Brady Barnett 10-1, but responded with a 15-4 major decision against St. Paul’s Sam Meyer.
Also placing for the Blue Streaks was Austin Wilson who took sixth at 152 pounds.
For Delta, senior and defending state champion Drew Mattin earned the 126-pound championship while Cole Mattin placed third at 120 pounds.
Drew Mattin opened with a 16-1 technical fall against Galion’s Cody Brady, earned a 14-1 win against Genoa’s Dustin Morgillo, pinned Jevyn Pratt of Carey and also Bruce Hrynciw of Oak Harbor to claim the title.
Cole Mattin took third by defeating Dakota Blanton of South Central 9-1. He earned pins over David Garcia of Gibsonburg and Caden Gurney of Mohawk before dropping a 4-3 decision to Genoa’s Julian Sanchez in the semifinal.
In the consolation bracket, Cole Mattin added a pin over Swanton’s Zach Schaller.
Dylan Rogers (182) placed sixth for the Panthers but came up short of a trip to state.
Evergreen got a runner-up placement from senior Jared Fahrer at 106 pounds. He defeated Will Blevins of Sandusky St. Marys Central Catholic 16-1, Otsego’s Jake Manley 11-3, Ray Adams of Edison 9-5 before losing 8-3 against Genoa’s Oscar Sanchez in the championship.
The 2017 OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament will be this Thursday through Saturday at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of the Ohio State University.
