With a host of players back with varsity experience, look for Wauseon volleyball to make some noise this season. The Indians got above .500 for the first time under coach Bill Blanchong last season, going 15-9 and capturing a sectional championship prior to falling to Defiance in the district semifinal.
The Indians get back six letter winners from last year’s squad. Returning for the Indians are Amy Bosell, Kallie Strauss (honorable mention All-NWOAL), Hayley Chamberlain, Morgan Bzovi, Morgan Roth and Karli Penrod.
“With five returning seniors and six returning letter winners, we are looking forward to using that experience this season,” stated coach Blanchong. “We look to be competitive in every league match and have set high goals in our league, sectional, and district.”
The Indians should also have great team chemistry with the number of upperclassmen returning, added the coach.
However, their roster is not exactly the same as it was a year ago. Letter winners lost were Kierra Fountain (first team All-NWOAL, All-District), Sariah Yackee (honorable mention All-NWOAL, All-District) and Sydney Bosell (honorable mention All-NWOAL, All-District).
Overall height is a concern for Blanchong. Their enforcers on the front line are likely to be Amy Bosell, Strauss and Chamberlain.
Newcomers to the varsity squad are Audry Lane, Caris Grime and Lexi Sauber.
Wauseon tied for fourth in the league standings in 2014. While Evergreen ran away with the title, this year the competition may be more wide open.
“The NWOAL will be competitive this year,” said Blanchong. “I think six possible teams will have a run at the title. It should make for an interesting season.”
The Indians’ season begins at Holgate on Aug. 25.
