NAPOLEON – The Wauseon wrestling team finished with seven individual champions and rolled to an overall sectional championship with 286.5 points Friday and Saturday at the Division II sectional tournament at Napoleon.

The next highest team was Defiance, who finished with 192.5 points.

“I thought our kids wrestled outstanding. We have been wrestling at a very high level for several weeks now,” said head coach Mike Ritter. “This is the most district qualifiers (13) we’ve had in my 13 years here. We set a goal as a team to win the tournament, which we did; to have everyone place in the top three, which we did for the kids who qualified, and to have all 14 kids qualify. We fell one shy of that goal, but what we accomplished is something to be very proud of.”

Winning titles for the Indians were Gavin Ritter at 106 pounds, Jarrett Bischoff (120), Hunter Yackee (132), Sandro Ramirez (145), Xavier Torres (152), Andrew Bailey (160), and Tony Banister (195).

Also, Mauricio Barajas (138) and Alex Sosa (285) were runners-up in their respective weight classes.

At 106 pounds, Ritter pinned Elida’s Ethan Grimm and Clayton Drummond of St. Marys Memorial to reach the championship match. He earned a 15-4 major decision over Caleb Hernandez of Napoleon in the championship.

Bischoff started his run at 120 pounds with a pin of Celina’s Sam Warner, then defeated Zane Hull of Napoleon 4-0. In the championship, he took on top seed Luke Beach of Wapakoneta, pinning him in 3:31.

Yackee pinned his way to the final at 132 pounds, winning by fall against Bryan’s Jared Ramey and Andrew Purtee of Elida. The final was much closer, as he defeated Napoleon’s Angel Granados 3-1.

At 145 pounds, Ramirez began with a pin of Trent Fairburn of Lima Shawnee, and then a 21-4 technical fall against Austin Hines of Celina. He followed that up with a 16-1 technical fall victory over Napoleon’s Skyler Brown in the title match.

Torres pinned Koleman Brown of Wapakoneta, earned a 14-3 major decision against Izaiah Salinas-Diaz of Defiance, and defeated Elida’s Gabe Makin 3-2 to win the 152-pound title.

Bailey picked up three pins to win the 160-pound title. He pinned Ivan Smith of Lima Shawnee in 3:11, Emiliano Gonzales of Defiance in 57 seconds, and Isaac Ingram of Lima Bath in 4:23.

At 195 pounds, Banister pinned Aaron Cole of Celina in 1:08 and bested Defiance’s Noah Arnett 2-0 in the semifinal. He closed with a 6-0 win against Elida’s Ke’Juan Frazier.

Placing third for the Indians were: Nolan Ray (113), who pinned Defiance’s Lupe Martinez in the third place match; Alex Slattman (126), who defeated Napoleon’s Jimmy Pelland 1-0; and Samuel Sosa (220), with a pin of Napoleon’s Korey Blosser.

Trent Davis also advanced to the district tournament, placing fourth at 170 pounds.

“Going into this week and the district tournament, we’ll strive to repeat that same performance,” Coach Ritter said. “We’ve been continuing to raise our level of wrestling every week, so we’ll have to do that for two more weeks to end the season on a strong note.”

The district tournament will be this Friday and Saturday at Mansfield High School.
