Wauseon boys win sectional, girls take second

DEFIANCE – The Wauseon swimming and diving team had a good showing at the Division II sectional tournament last week at Ayersville. The Wauseon boys were sectional champions ahead of runner-up Celina, while the girls finished second to Ottawa-Glandorf.

With their effort, several of their athletes qualified for the upcoming district tournament at Bowling Green State University.

In the boys meet, Branden Arredondo took sixth in the 50 yard freestyle and third in the 100 yard freestyle to advance to the district tournament. Ryan Scherer advanced with runner-up finishes in the 100 yard freestyle and 200 IM.

Nicholas Dilworth advanced by finishing first in both the 200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle. Also advancing in those events were Lukas Dominique who placed sixth in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle, and Austin Schuette who finished third in the 200 freestyle and second in the 500 freestyle.

Kyle Vernot took seventh in the 500 freestyle to advance.

Mac Warncke qualified with a seventh place finish in the 200 IM and sixth place finish in the 100 butterfly.

In the 200 medley relay, Wauseon’s team of James Hutchinson, Lucas Blanchong, Warncke and Seth Hutchison finished third to advance.

Their 200 freestyle relay team of Austin Schuette, Dilworth, Scherer and Arredondo also advanced with a third place finish. That same team took second in the 400 freestyle relay.

In diving, Tony Schweinhagen finished second with a score of 402.3. That mark was good enough to send him to the district competition.

The girls diving team of Patience Bachman, Kennedy Nation, Megan Carroll, and Audry Lane will represent Wauseon at districts. Bachman placed second at the sectional tournament with a score of 418.4.

In swimming, McKenzie Darnell advanced by taking first in both the 100 yard freestyle and 200 yard freestyle. Alexys Carteaux took seventh in the 100 yard freestyle and fourth in the 200 IM, advancing in both events.

Brooke Schuette took second in the 200 yard freestyle and was first in the 500 yard freestyle to advance. Kate Precht finished fourth in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Sydney Darnell earned a pair of first place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly and 200 IM.

Wauseon’s 400 yard freestyle relay team of McKenzie Darnell, Sydney Darnell, Brooke Schuette and Carteaux finished first with a time of 3:48.44. That same team also won the 200 yard freestyle relay.

The district diving meet was held today at BGSU. The swimming events will be Friday at 3 p.m.
