In what came down to a bout between a pair of county schools, Swanton wrestling closed with three pins and a major decision to defeat Archbold 38-21 at the regional quarterfinal of the team dual tournament in Region 17 Wednesday.

The victory got the Bulldogs one step closer to reaching the state dual tournament, as they advanced to the regional semifinal round which takes place this Wednesday.

“Archbold is a good team and a lot of credit to them. They wrestled hard. But we had wrestled them earlier in the year, so, we had a good idea what their lineup was,” said Swanton coach Greg Hallett after the match. “The heavyweights came through.”

The host school, Swanton, was able to face the Blue Streaks after opening the night with a 65-9 victory against Otsego.

The Knights earned a forfeit victory at 106 pounds, and a 4-0 decision for Cameron Pollard over Swanton’s Zach Schaller at 113 pounds. From there, however, the Bulldogs would sweep the dual.

Picking up pins for the Dogs were Dylan Cook at 126 pounds, Noah Saunders (138), Zack Leahey (182), and Tommy Lytle (285). They also had five wins by forfeit.

Archbold was the sixth seed, and they began their night with a 39-33 victory over third-seeded Elmwood. The Streaks had seven straight wins to start the match, giving them a 35-0 lead through 145 pounds.

And while their only remaining win was an Austin Wilson major decision over Elmwood’s Garrett Wright at 160 pounds, it was enough to advance them to the final.

Swanton began the match against Archbold with a 11-2 major decision for Zach Schaller against Dawson Liechty at 106 pounds, and after both teams forfeited in the next two weight classes Cook earned a 8-4 decision for Swanton over Zach Rocha of Archbold at 126 pounds.

This gave the Dogs a 13-6 lead.

Archbold’s Gavin Grime and Swanton’s Noah Saunders then traded decision victories at 132 pounds and 138 pounds, respectively. The Streaks then took over the lead with four decisions.

At 145 pounds, Noah Mattin defeated Chase Moore of Swanton 7-2, Austin Wilson added a 2-1 win over Ryan Marvin, Colton Soles defeated Mitchell Reisinger 7-6, and Kasyn Schaffner bested Tyler Houston 7-5.

“We had a lot of things go our way at the beginning of the match. We had a lot of guys wrestle tough in a bunch of tight matches,” said Archbold coach Brian Becher. “We knew that we were going to struggle a little bit up top. They were a little bit more experienced than we were.”

The run for Swanton began at 182 pounds as Leahey pinned Archbold’s Izrael Reyes, giving Swanton the lead once again in the match, 22-21. Leahey’s pin came 41 seconds into round two.

“He is making scratch 60. So he is on his way down,” said Hallett of Leahey. “He was giving up quite a bit. He doesn’t have a full gas tank right now, making the cut for the first time this year down to ‘60. He dug deep for that (win) and came through.”

This created a domino effect, as Crew Oberheim pinned Gibson Burkholder at 195 pounds, and Greg Wilson pinned Trevor Short at 220 pounds. In the heavyweight match, Swanton closed with Lytle’s 10-2 major decision over Anthony Gonzalez.

“Obviously, those pins hurt,” said Becher. “And the bigger thing is, it gets them a lot of momentum going into those next matches, too.”

Swanton will now face Eastwood, who upset four-time defending state champion Delta in the other quarterfinal, at the regional semifinal Wednesday at Ayersville, beginning at 6 p.m.

“Exciting,” said Hallett on the achievement by his team. “And a great opportunity ahead of us. Looking forward to next week.”

Delta’s run at another state dual title came to an end after the 39-35 loss at home to Eastwood Wednesday. After just scraping by Lake 40-39 in the first match, the Panthers met their match against the Eagles.

Eastwood only had three outright wins in the dual, but two of them came by way of pin. They also had four wins by forfeit.

The Eagles closed with a 3-0 win for Zane Zientek over Dalton Richard at 195 pounds, plus a pair of forfeit victories to finish off the Panthers.

Earning pins for the Panthers against Eastwood were Drew Mattin at 132 pounds, C.J. Leffler (138), Colin Hoffman (145) and J.D. Osborn (170). Delta also got a 19-3 technical fall win for Cole Mattin against Cody Collins at 120 pounds, and a win by forfeit from Dylan Rogers at 182 pounds.

There was a double forfeit at 126 pounds.
