The Wauseon wrestling team strengthened their grip on the NWOAL race with wins over defending league champion Delta and Evergreen at a home quad Thursday.

The victories got them to 6-0 in the NWOAL.

“The Delta match was a nice win for us,”said Wauseon coach Mike Ritter. “Delta has been very good over the last several years. They had a great senior class last year, but still have some very good wrestlers. They’re the defending league champs, so winning a league title has to go through them. Winning that dual was a step for us to win the league.”

In the Wauseon and Delta match, the Panthers grabbed the early lead when Dylan Rogers defeated Aaron Harris 13-3 at 182 pounds. Wauseon took it back when Tony Banister pinned Dalton Richard in 3:17 at 195 pounds.

Delta’s Jaccob Wolford earned a 7-4 decision against Sammy Sosa at 220 pounds, giving the Panthers the 7-6 lead. However, the Indians then got three straight victories by forfeit to take the lead 24-7.

Cole Mattin of Delta recorded a 9-1 victory over Alex Slattman in the 120-pound match to get the Panthers back on the board. At 126 pounds, Drew Mattin pinned Wauseon’s Nolan Ray in 1:17.

That would be the last victory in the dual for the Panthers.

Wauseon responded as Jarrett Bischoff (132) got a 7-5 overtime victory over CJ Leffler, Hunter Yackee (138) defeated Colin Hoffman 5-1, Sandro Ramirez (145) pinned Dawson Swicegood in 2:19, and Xavier Torres (152) defeated Tristen Saeger by a 13-1 major decision.

The Indians also added forfeit victories at 160 and 170 pounds to finish off the win.

“I thought our kids had a very aggressive approach, which helps,” said Coach Ritter. “That’s kind of our style, and when we wrestle with that aggressive mindset we’re tough to beat.”

Evergreen was defeated by Liberty Center in their first match, 66-10. The lone wins for the Vikings were Jared Fahrer (106) by pin against Ethan Borstelman, and Isaac Yunker (160) by major decision against Travis Keezer.

The Vikings were then shut out by Wauseon, 72-0, in their second match of the night. Delta added a 43-34 victory against Liberty Center.

Getting pins for the Panthers were Cole Mattin (120), Drew Mattin (126), Saeger (152), Rogers (182), Richard (195) and Wolford (285). They also got major decisions from Leffler (132) and Hoffman (138).

Wauseon, along with Archbold and Delta competed at the Maumee Bay Classic over the weekend. The Indians won the tournament, edging Medina 221.5-168.5 in the final team standings.

They finished with four individual champions as Gavin Ritter was first at 106 pounds, Yackee was first at 132 pounds, Ramirez at 145 pounds, and Banister at 195 pounds.

The Indians also got a runner-up placement from Andrew Bailey at 160 pounds. He dropped a narrow 7-5 decision to Alex Defraine of Medina in the title match.

Delta, led by Drew Mattin, who won the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award, finished ninth with 100 points. Drew Mattin claimed the 126-pound title with a pin against Bruce Hrynciw of Oak Harbor.

Cole Mattin was runner-up at 120 pounds when he was defeated by Anthony Wayne’s Cody Moosman, 5-2, in the final.

Archbold was 27th overall with 54.5 points. They had a pair of third place finishers in Gavin Grime at 132 pounds and Noah Mattin at 138 pounds.
