PERRYSBURG – Wauseon won the Perrysburg Invitational wrestling tournament which concluded Saturday. The Indians finished with 193.5 points, while Delta took fourth with 150 points.
Evergreen also competed, placing 20th with 37.5 points.
Notable placers for the Indians were Mauricio Barajas who was the champion at 132 pounds, as well as Alex Slattman, Andrew Bailey and Tony Banister who were each runner-up in their respective weight classes.
Barajas was the champion at 132 with a 2-0 decision over Bryce Quinlan of Toledo Central Catholic. He also earned pins of Whitmer’s Serenity Thomas and Otsego’s Gus Mancuso, and a 3-1 victory over Napoleon’s Angel Granados.
At 120 pounds, Wauseon’s Alex Slattman was runner-up to Cole Mattin of Delta who defeated him 4-2 in the championship match. Slattman reached the championship with pins of Andy Hinojosa of Tinora, Avery Bair of Centerville, and Brice Taylor of Springfield.
Cole Mattin began his run to the title with pins of Central Catholic’s Cresencio Soto and Sylvania Northview’s Ryan Morgan, then he earned a 15-2 technical fall over Jeff Williams of St. John’s Jesuit.
At 160 pounds, Wauseon’s Andrew Bailey fell to Perrysburg’s Josh Herhold 4-3 in the title match. Prior to that match, Bailey earned a pin over Delta’s John Mlynarek, defeated Defiance’s Isaiah Diaz 20-3, and Alexzander Savona of St. John’s 12-1.
Banister started his run with an 11-3 win against Ryan Haas of Maumee, then he pinned Shayne Jackson of St. John’s, and defeated Perrysburg’s Chase Newton 3-1. He fell in the 195-pound championship to Elmwood’s Dylan Hinton.
The second title claimed by Delta was Drew Mattin at 126 pounds. He won the championship by pinning Defiance’s Danny Assaf in 1:59.
Drew Mattin also earned pins over Central Catholic’s Muhammed Mahdi, Perrysburg’s Chase Walczak, and Bowsher’s Skylar Viengmany. He then added a 17-1 win against Blaike Ellis of Whitmer.
Delta’s Dylan Rogers dropped a 5-2 decision to Elmwood’s Jace Grossman to place second at 182 pounds. Before that, he earned pins against Bryan’s Andrew Allen, Defiance’s Emiliano Gonzales, and Maumee’s Noah Pasquinelli.
