Indians, Panthers finish in top 20 at Brecksville holiday tournament

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – Both Delta and Wauseon competed at the Brecksville Holiday Invitational wrestling tourament last Thursday and Friday.

Wauseon had a pair of grapplers with runner-up finishes, leading them to place 9th (119.5 points) out of 49 teams. Delta placed 20th with 72 points.

Finishing second for the Indians were Sandro Ramirez at 145 pounds and Tony Banister at 195.

After a bye in the first round, Ramirez defeated Trevor Mitch of Aurora 13-4, William Schmidt of Walsh Jesuit by pin, Eric Beck of La Salle 5-4, and Olentangy Liberty’s Carson Kharchla 4-3 to reach the championship. In the final he lost narrowly to Kevon Freeman of Lake Catholic, 2-1.

Banister opened with a pin of Quran Lamb of Brecksville-Broadview Heights, then earned a 7-1 decision against Chad McDaniel of Cuyahoga Heights, a 5-1 victory over Michael Drobnick of St. Ignatius, 2-0 over Elyria’s Cameron King, and 3-2 over Pete Abraham of Padua Franciscan to reach the title match.

In the championship, he was dropped by Dundee’s Brandon Whitman 6-1.

Hunter Yackee (138) and Andrew Bailey (160) both finished 7th for the Indians.

Yackee defeated Elder’s Jake Meridieth 4-2 in the seventh place match. He also earned pins over Ryan Stewart of Olentangy Liberty and Jimmy Schill of Elyria; a major decision against Cody Hawthorne of Shadyside; and 3-2 victory over Luke McKeon of Lake Catholic.

Bailey got a pin against Tyler Speelman of Nelsonville-York to take seventh at 160. He also defeated Soren Osicka of Brecksville-Broadview Heights by major decision, and added pins against Troy Murphy of Clay and Corey Bogan of Mechanicsburg.

Leading Delta was Drew Mattin who took third at 126 pounds and Travis Barnes who placed 8th at 145.

For Mattin at 126, he began with a win over Alliance’s Gene Rodgers, then pinned both Mike Farkas of South Willoughby and Derek Sharp of Marysville, before dropping the semifinal match to Jordan Decatur of Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.

Mattin responded with a 5-0 victory over Elyria’s Josh Breeding, then defeated Matthew Fields of Walsh Jesuit 7-0 to finish seventh.

At 145, Barnes defeated Faybyon Todd of Elyria by decision, earned pins over Will Brown of Shadyside and Christian Marinozzi of Mentor, and got a win by disqualification over Beck of La Salle.

He dropped a 4-1 decision to Walker Heard of Marysville in the seventh place match.
