If the Delta Panthers got caught looking for an air raid shelter last Friday night at Evergreen, no one probably could blame them.
The Vikings fired at a 59 percent clip from the field, including eight three-point bombs in the first three quarters to open up a big lead and coast to a 63-43 win over the Panthers.
Freshman Nate Brighton began the onslaught with a three-ball from the top of the key, and after the Panthers Gabe Freeman countered, Bryce Hudik followed a short time later to give the Vikes an 8-3 lead with 5:10 left in the first.
Elliot Schneider’s three-point play whittled the Evergreen lead to 8-6, but after Phoenix VanOstrand found Brighton cutting backdoor for a score, Mason Loeffler hit back-to-back triples and scored on a back cut pass from Josh Dowling, giving Evergreen a 19-8 lead.
Freeman’s basket and Peyton Phillips’ pair from the line got the Panthers within 19-12 at the quarter, but Evergreen exploded again in the second. With the same seven point margin, Loeffler hit another three-ball, Teagen Pinkelman scored on a fastbreak pass from Brighton and another Brighton triple put the Vikings up 16. Brady Wymer’s three-pointer and a free throw kept the Panthers in contact, 36-24, at halftime.
After Dylan Smith hit a three to get Delta to less than a double digit deficit to start the third, the Vikings scored 13 of the next 16 to take a 49-30 lead.
Chandler Lumbrezer’s three-point play started the barrage, Hudik drilled a three from above the top of the key, Brighton did the same, then Loeffler and Lumbrezer each scored fastbreak hoops to give Evergreen a commanding lead.
For the game Evergreen shot 24 of 41 while the Panthers were 15 for 43.
The Vikings also outrebounded Delta 26-17.
Loeffler’s 19 points led a very balanced attack that had four Vikes in double figures. Lumbrezer had 14, Brighton 13, and Hudik 10.
For the Panthers, Wymer had 11 points while Freeman and Phillips each had 10.
Evergreen is now 4-3 on the season and will play in the Northwood Invitational this week.
Delta traveled to Stryker Tuesday where they were defeated 53-21. The Panthers (0-8) host Fayette on Friday.
