By all accounts the Archbold girls basketball team had a successful season in 2015-16, finishing with a 20-4 record and 6-2 mark in the NWOAL.

They did fall short of capturing the league crown as Evergreen won it outright. Therefore, a goal of the Blue Streaks this season is to have a better finish in the NWOAL.

“With seven (letter winners) returning and four starters back from last year’s 20-4 team, (it) gives us hopes of another strong season,” said Archbold coach Brian Ziegler. “We want to improve on last year’s 6-2 NWOAL record. And play more games in the tournament than last year.”

Along with having many returning players, Ziegler likes the quickness and overall speed of his team, as well as the fact that they have some “decent size.”

As to weaknesses, depth will be an issue for the Streaks.

Archbold graduated four letter winners off the 2015-16 team, but only one of those received all-league honors.

Those who graduated are Cassi Wyse (honorable mention All-NWOAL, District 7), Shelby Cline, Neila Kinsman and Brooke Hines.

The primary returnee for the Streaks is senior Kierstyn Repp who was first team All-NWOAL, third team all-district, and first team District 7 a season ago. She averaged 13.6 points per game and finished with 45 steals on the year.

Also back is junior Kamryn Hostetler, who made second team all-league, honorable mention all-district, and second team District 7 a season ago. She averaged 7.5 points and 3.5 assists per game last season, all while picking up 53 steals defensively.

Other returnees are Alyssa Ziegler (honorable mention all-league, District 7), Andi Peterson (honorable mention District 7), Morgan Miller, Emie Peterson and Brooke Kohler.

The Streaks also have newcomers Blair Bucklew, Gabby Nafziger, and Lily Krieger.

Like always, Ziegler knows that winning the league will not be easy.

“The NWOAL is very competitive with good coaches and players,” he said. “Our goal is to compete hard every game and put ourselves in a good position later in the season.”
