ELIDA – One big inning from Clear Fork was enough to end Archbold’s 2016 tournament run. A four-run third inning propelled the Colts to a 4-3 victory over the Streaks in the Division III regional baseball final on Friday at Elida.
Archbold jumped on the Colts quickly with a two-running first inning. Derek Walker led off with a walk and came home on a double off the bat of Ben Bucklew.
Bucklew crossed the plate to make it 2-0 Archbold on a sacrifice fly from Lathon Babcock.
The Streaks added another run in the top of the third inning. Toby Walker singled and came around to score, putting Archbold ahead 3-0.
Clear Fork registered just a pair of base hits in their pivotal third inning. Ultimately, a single from Hunter Boyer scored Luke Clark to give the Colts a 4-3 lead.
The Blue Streaks had a golden opportunity in the fifth inning, but Clear Fork’s Jalen Sheriff pitched out of a based loaded jam. Toby Walker and Bucklew singled to start the inning before a Bryce Williams walk loaded the bases.
However, Sheriff got a pair of a pop outs and a fielder’s choice to preserve the Colts’ slim lead.
Toby Walker again led off the seventh inning with a single. He moved into scoring position at second, but could not be brought home, clinching the game for Clear Fork.
The Colts’ unlikely run in the tournament continues with a trip to the state final four with a record of 19-12.
