A four-run fourth inning for Lima Shawnee was enough as Shawnee starting pitcher Blake Casady walked seven batters, but allowed just two runs as they defeated the home team Wauseon, 4-2, in the Division II baseball sectional semifinal on Saturday.
Wauseon struck first in the bottom of the third.
Brooks Gype walked to lead off the inning, then Everett Bueter’s sacrifice bunt moved him to second. A triple by Josh Whitcomb scored Gype to make it 1-0.
After a strikeout, Carter Bzovi walked and stole second to put a pair of Wauseon runners in scoring position. However, Casady got the next batter to pop up to end the threat.
Shawnee responded by scoring all four of their runs in the next half inning.
Wauseon walked leadoff hitter Jared Thomas to begin the frame, and he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Sevitz. Trenton Ward reached on a fielding error, and Casady’s single scored Thomas to tie the game. Tyler Hall’s sacrifice fly scored Ward to give Shawnee the lead at 2-1.
They were not done, however, as Tyler Moore kept it going for Shawnee with a walk. Nick May then doubled which scored a pair to make it 4-1 before a pop out by Spencer Caudill ended it.
However, Wauseon got one back in the next half inning.
Brady Kinnersley led off with a walk and stole second. Back-to-back outs followed, but Gype came through with an RBI-single to pull them within 4-2. He was thrown out while trying to get to second which ended the threat.
Wauseon had their best chance to knot the score when they loaded the bases with two down in the home half of the sixth. Kinnersley started the action with a one-out walk, then CJ Moser reached on an error and after a fly out, Gype’s base on balls filled the bases.
That effort was all for naught though as Casady got Bueter down on strikes in a lengthy at bat.
Wauseon put a pair of runners on with one out in the seventh after Whitcomb’s blooper and a walk to Bzovi. The next two batters would pop up to end the game and Wauseon’s hopes at a long tournament run.
Whitcomb was the only Wauseon hitter with more than one hit, finishing 2 for 4 with an RBI. Gype had the team’s other RBI.
Casady gave up only five hits to get the win on the mound, countering his seven base on balls with seven punchouts. Brady Rupp of Wauseon took the loss despite giving up just two hits while striking out six.
