Swanton held two-run leads twice in the contest, but Wauseon fought back and with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth, they defeated the Bulldogs by an 8-4 final in NWOAL softball Thursday.

Oliviah Banister’s solo home run to left field and an RBI single for Erin Douglass helped the Indians knot the score at two apiece in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Dogs responded in the next half inning.

Swanton’s Hannah Gombash led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on Taylor Merritt’s bunt. Then, with two out, Deanna Herr singled and Hayley McMahan followed with a single to right-center that plated a pair which put the Dogs up 4-2.

Wauseon responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth, as Reagan Spadafore singled to score a pair of runs to retie it at four. Hayley Chamberlain also singled for the Indians but it was not deep enough to score Banister from third and she was out.

But, a single up the middle from Taylor Benschoter plated Spadafore to give Wauseon the 5-4 lead.

Swanton got a single from Taylor Dohm to lead off the away half of the sixth, but otherwise, Wauseon’s new pitcher Alisa Shelt struck out the side to avoid any damage.

Similar to the fifth, the Indians once again filled the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Spadafore’s one-out two-run double plated Ana Lozano and Ally Tefft to put the margin at 7-4.

Douglass was next and she reached on an error by the Swanton shortstop, scoring Banister to equal the final tally.

Swanton got a walk from Haley Nelson and Herr reached on an error with one gone in the next half inning, but Shelt fanned the next two batters to end the game.

Spadafore paced Wauseon on offense as she went 4 for 4 with four RBIs, while Douglass went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. McMahan (1 for 4) and Dohm (2 for 3) each had a pair of RBIs for Swanton.

Tefft pitched five innings to get the win in the circle, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out six. Shelt had six strikeouts in two innings of work.

Abby Lawson of Swanton took the loss.

Wauseon added a 3-1 home victory over North Central on Friday, but was defeated on the road at Fairview Saturday, 5-1.

The Indians host Delta Tuesday in league play, are at Wayne Trace Thursday and host Bryan on Friday. Swanton hosts Toledo Christian today and is at Toledo Rogers for a doubleheader on Friday.
