The Archbold baseball team is looking to improve upon their 20-6 campaign from a season ago. It was a season in which they finished third in the NWOAL with a 5-3 record.
“This is a hard working group that is very competitive. They will give everything they’ve got every time on the field,” said head coach Dick Selgo who begins his eighth season at the helm.
The Blue Streaks have eight returning letter winners, but sophomore Sam Petersen will miss most or all of the season because of surgery on his wrist, according to Selgo.
Coming back is Lathon Babcock who was first team All-NWOAL, and Derek Walker, Ben Bucklew, and Toby Walker who were each honorable mention All-NWOAL.
Babcock was 6-1 on the mound and had a 1.90 earned run average. Derek Walker posted a .292 batting average with 11 stolen bases, and also was 3-2 on the mound with a 1.20 ERA.
Bucklew had a 6-2 record and 2.81 ERA, all while batting .296 with 19 RBIs. Toby Walker had a .364 batting average.
Promising newcomers for the Streaks are Gabe Petersen, Bryce Williams and Brandon Miller.
“We should be very solid defensively,” said Selgo of his team’s strengths. “We also have some pitchers coming back that were very effective last season. “
However, there are some concerns that the coach has.
“Hitting and scoring runs will be a question mark. This may be a big factor in how our season goes,” he said.
The Streaks will have to replace production left behind by CJ Brubaker who was second team All-NWOAL, Logan Hogrefe, Hayden Galvan, Jeff Sparks and Matt Sevey.
Selgo views defending champion Bryan as the team to beat once again.
“Bryan is usually in the race for the league title, and I don’t see any reason why they won’t be again, until someone proves otherwise,” he said.
