TOLEDO – In perhaps the toughest draw for any of the girls basketball teams in the area, Wauseon squared off with the ninth ranked team in the state in Division II, Toledo Rogers, in Saturday’s sectional championship at Bowsher. It did not go well for the Indians as they were beaten by the Lady Rams 70-25.

The Rams exploded out to a 10-0 lead in the first 7:56 of the opening quarter as Lauren Smith and Myia McLeod hit threes, while Akienrah Johnson added a pair of buckets. Wauseon then got on the board at the 1:56 mark as Anna Marshall scored inside, however, Johnson responded with a three.

Sydney Petty’s triple and a steal and score for Tanaya Beacham pushed the Rogers lead to 18-2. Two free throws for Wauseon’s Brianna Castellano ended the frame with the Rams up by 14.

Rogers began the second period with a putback by Petty that was answered with a jump shot by Wauseon’s Lexi Sauber, but a bucket for Johnson made it 22-6 at the six minute mark.

Following a pair of missed Ram free throws, Marshall pegged a triple for the Indians, reducing the Ram advantage to 13 with 3:50 left in the half. This is as close as they would be the rest of the way.

Rogers scored the next six points, all two-point buckets by Johnson, to open up their advantage to 28-9 with 2:35 remaining.

Marshall then scored on a drive to the basket for the Indians while Castellano added a jumper in between buckets for Beacham and the Rams’ Zia Cooke, putting the score at 32-13 with 1:21 left in the half. A corner deuce for Johnson ended the half with the Rams on top 34-13.

Led by their fast and pressure filled defense, which forced 13 Wauseon giveaways for the game, Rogers would outscore the Indians 36-12 after the break.

They never looked back after beginning the third with Cooke’s three-point play, Johnson’s triple, a basket on a fastbreak for Cooke, Smith’s bucket on a drive to the goal and Beacham’s basket inside around a jumper for Wauseon’s Rylee Campbell to push their lead to 46-15.

Johnson had 23 points and Beacham 10 to lead Rogers. Marshall had seven and Campbell six for Wauseon.

The Rams also outrebounded the Indians 39-18.
