Panthers win sectional championship


30 Fulton County wrestlers advance

Delta won eight individual titles en route to a Division III sectional wrestling championship on Saturday at Archbold High School.

The Panthers totalled 298 points as a team to handily beat out second place Archbold, who had 175. Tinora was third and Swanton fourth.

With 11 wrestlers in the championship finals, Delta was well on its way to a title as Cole Mattin won the first individual title at 106 pounds. Drew Mattin won the second title for the Panthers at 120 pounds.

Jake Spiess won the crown at 132 pounds over Swanton’s Chase Moore by injury default. Dustin Marteney, Travis Barnes, and Jesse Beverly brought the string of Delta titles to four as Beverly topped Garrett Grime of Archbold 24-9.

Dylan Rogers added a title at 182 pounds and Devon Richard won the 220 pound title for the Panthers.

Archbold had three individual champions on their way to the runner-up finish. Noah Mattin claimed the first title with a 2-0 decision over C.J. Leffler of Delta at 126 pounds.

Mitchell Hogrefe and David Bell won back-to-back titles at 160 and 170 pounds for the Blue Streaks.

Also among the 13 district qualifiers for Delta were Ross Rayfield, who was second at 113 pounds; Chance Veller, who was runner-up by injury default at 285 pounds; Jaccob Wolford, third place; and Colin Hoffman, fourth.

Archbold had six qualifiers that also included Gavin Grime, third place; and Austin Wilson, third place.

Eight Swanton wrestlers will move on to the district tournament. In addition to runner-up Moore, Trevor Schaller, J.D. Reisinger, and Zach Leahey were third for the Bulldogs, while Zack Schaller, Ryan Marvin, Greg Wilson, and Tommy Lytle finished fourth.

Three Evergreen wrestlers will compete at the district tournament. Jared Fahrer was second at 106 pounds, while Mason Kasefang and Tony Boger were fourth in their respective weight classes.

The district tournament will begin Friday at 4 p.m. at Toledo Waite High School. Action continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The top four in each weight class will advance to the state tournament.
