NAPOLEON – The Wauseon wrestling team won the Division II sectional title at Napoleon over the weekend, beating out runner-up Defiance 234.5-185.5. The Indians also qualified 11 wrestlers for the district next weekend.

“I thought our kids wrestled very well over the weekend,” said Wauseon head coach Mike Ritter. “Our goal was to get out everyone we entered, and we left one shy of that goal.

“With the new seeding procedures implemented by the NW District Board, it really limited our ability to challenge other wrestlers for seeds coming into the tournament because we didn’t have many head-to-head match ups with the teams that were in our sectional. So, there were some kids seeded a lot lower than what they should’ve been. I think they used that as motivation because we came out very aggressive right from the opening whistle. We ended up putting nine in the finals, and after we knew they qualified for the district, our goal was to then come out with as many firsts as possible to set ourselves up for the district tournament.”

Winning sectional championships for the Indians were Alex Slattman at 113 pounds, Hunter Yackee (132), Sandro Ramirez (145), Tre Campbell (182) and Tony Banister (195).

Finishing runner-up were Gavin Ritter (106), Andrew Bailey (138), Xavier Torres (152) and Derek Schuette (160). McKayla Campbell placed third at 113 pounds, Alex Sosa fourth at 285 pounds, and Trent Davis sixth at 170.
