Wauseon made it tough on the 11th ranked team in Division II, the Defiance Bulldogs Tuesday at home in girls basketball, but their first half deficit was too much to overcome and ultimately they fell by a final of 53-40.
Defiance held the lead by double digits at halftime, however, the margin was only 33-20 and the game was not out of reach.
Kennedy Replogle hit a pair of free throws for the Bulldogs which were answered on a basket from Rylee Campbell, then Defiance responded with Morgan Wityk’s three-pointer, making it 38-22 at the 5:41 mark of the third.
At the end of the frame, the Indians pulled within 40-30 after a Chelsie Raabe hoop in the paint and Anna Koenig’s triple with three seconds remaining.
They would get within single digits multiple times in the fourth, often times thanks to Campell. Just before the halfway point, Campbell scored following an Indian steal to trim Defiance’s lead at 46-38.
Then, after Emily Poling stepped to the foul line and hit a pair, Campbell scored with a defender guarding her tight to keep them within eight with 3:11 left.
However, the Indians would go scoreless from that point on.
Wauseon got down by 11, 20-9, after the opening quarter. Defiance was able to increase that margin by two in the second period.
In the beginning of the frame Sydney Zirkle split a pair of free throws for Wauseon, Ally Tefft added a pair from the foul line, and Campbell hit a three in response to a trey from Defiance to make the score 23-15 1:24 in. But, the Bulldogs outscored Wauseon 10-5 in the final six minutes plus and they led by double digits at the half.
Campbell led the Indians in scoring with 15 points. Replogle led all scorers with 18 and Wityk added 14 for Defiance.
