Fayette boys basketball coach Todd Mitchell wants his team to focus on the little things in order to have success on the court this season.
“We need to value our possessions and play solid defense every night,” said Mitchell. “If we control what’s in our control, like attitude and effort, we will be very competitive.”
Returning for the Eagles are three all-league performers in the Buckeye Border Conference from a season ago.
Returning are Clayton Pheils (honorable mention All-BBC), Travis Wagner (honorable mention All-BBC), and Trey Keefer (honorable mention All-BBC). They also get back Grant Reinking.
“We will rely on solid guard play. Our quickness will be one of our strengths,” explained Mitchell. “We return four starters from last year. We should have a balanced offensive attack this season.”
Their biggest loss will be that of three-year letter winner Tharyn Colegrove. He was first team All-BBC, honorable mention District 7 and honorable mention all-district as a senior last season.
Also gone are Austin Lopez and Drake Bowditch.
Looking to help fill the void are newcomers Karrsen Schaffner, Porter Maginn, and Noah Brinegar.
“We lack size so rebounding and defense will take a team effort,” said Mitchell of his team’s potential weaknesses.
The coach expects the league season to be competitive.
“Playing everyone twice in the league always makes for some good games,” he said. “Every team is familiar with each other so you must come focused and ready to play every night. I would say Pettisville and Stryker would be the favorites to start the season.”
