It goes without saying when a team’s record is 1-22, they had a down year. However, the Delta boys basketball team has high hopes for the upcoming season with a new coach and a pair of All-Northwest Ohio Athletic League players returning.
“(The) Panthers are looking to revive a once dominant program this year. Getting back to playing fundamentally sound basketball,” said new skipper Ron Rouleau.
Delta will lean on returning letter winners Gabe Freeman, Elliot Schneider, Brandon Burkhart and Brady Wymer.
Freeman returns after averaging 7 points per game a season ago. He was also honorable mention All-NWOAL.
Wymer averaged 7 ppg as well, and was honorable mention All-NWOAL and District 7.
“Attitude, work ethic and team quickness,” Rouleau said of his team’s strengths. Weaknesses are a lack of size and experience.
The Panthers have to replace just one all-league performer from a year ago, losing Goirgio Festinoni who was honorable mention all-league. Other departed letter winners include Dylan Smith, Zak Davis and Peyton Phillips.
Newcomers to the roster are Robby Arredondo, Jared Gilders, Cody Pelton and Noah Tedrow.
As for the league, Rouleau knows each game will be a slugfest.
“Should be another competitive season in the NWOAL,” he said. “Two state final four teams, Archbold and Wauseon, return most of their talent. The rest will be chasing them. Every game will be a battle.”
