Despite graduating a first team All-Ohio player from a season ago, the cupboard is not bare for an Archbold girls basketball team that went 26-2 in 2016-17.
“Looking for another good season with the amount of talent returning,” said head coach Brian Ziegler. “As with every year, players will need to step into new roles and contribute. Kierstyn, Alyssa, and Morgan provided good leadership and stats that we need to try and replace.”
Returning for the Blue Streaks are Kamryn Hostetler (first team All-NWOAL, second team District 7, honorable mention all-district), Emie Peterson (honorable mention All-NWOAL, District 7), Andi Peterson (honorable mention All-NWOAL, District 7), Lily Krieger, Brooke Kohler, Blair Bucklew and Gabby Nafziger.
“Seven lettermen and two starters returning off of last season’s 26-2 team with a lot of game experience,” said coach Ziegler of his team’s strengths. “Good athletes, with quickness and speed, should allow us to play fast and apply pressure on defense.”
They will have to replace three letter winners, most notably Kierstyn Repp who made first team All-Ohio and was co-player of the year in the Northwest District.
Also gone are Alyssa Ziegler (honorable mention All-NWOAL, District 7) and Morgan Miller (second team All-NWOAL, honorable mention all-district, honorable mention District 7).
Newcomers who will look to make an impact are Naomi Rodriguez, Kayla Boettger, Leah Hall and Faith Wyse.
There are some areas of concern heading into the season.
“Only 2 starters back,” said Ziegler of his team’s main weakness. “Need to replace scoring and rebounding that was lost to graduation.”
Prior to their postseason run where they finished as regional runner-up in Division III, the Streaks were also NWOAL champions after finishing 7-0 in the league.
They will look to defend that title this season.
“Our league and area has good players and coaches,” said Ziegler. “The NWOAL is balanced so we need to work hard to ensure we are in the mix of first place teams come February.”
