PEMBERVILLE – Eastwood started fast, withstood a furious Evergreen rally, and finished faster with a game ending 31-9 run to take a 67-41 win in the Vikings girls basketball season opener Saturday.
The Eagles blew out to an 11-0 lead in the first two minutes started by a Jamie Schmeltz triple, and ended with the 5’10” sophomore finishing on a fastbreak. Hannah Herr’s pair of hoops helped keep the Vikings within 13-6 but the Eagles rang off the next 10 as Schmeltz and Sydney Abke each hit a three-ball, Schmeltz a pair from the foul line, and Jaylee Souder with a layup in transition for a 23-6 lead before Bailee Sutter scored just before the buzzer for the Vikes.
That basket started a 14-0 Viking run as Savannah VanOstrand nailed a triple, Jamie VanLoocke scored off the offensive glass, Abi Borojevich hit a spinning bank shot, Sutter scored again inside and Mady Peluso went left-right-left down the key to close the gap to 23-20 with 5:19 left in the half.
After Schmeltz scored off a steal, one of 22 first half Viking turnovers, Kelsie Komisarek and Herr hit back-to-back threes’ to give the Vikes a 26-25 lead.
One more steal and score by Schmeltz gave Eastwood a 29-26 halftime lead.
Morgan Rost and Kelley Turk hit triples early in the third to get Eastwood back to a 36-29 lead.
Herr’s left-handed drive and a free throw from VanOstrand chopped that lead to 36-32, but that would be as close as Evergreen could get as 13 more second half turnovers and 6 for 23 from the floor doomed the Vikings the rest of the way.
Eastwood put the game away with a 12-0 game-ending run that included five cherry pick baskets from Schmeltz and Rost.
Schmeltz scored 29 to lead the Eagles while Herr had 18 for Evergreen.
The Vikings play Otsego at home Tuesday evening.
