BRYAN – Evergreen had a chance to end a much improved 2017 season with a good win.
However, when the rain and wind began turning the field at Bryan into slop, the Vikings slipped, slid and wilted in a 35-0 loss.
The Golden Bears finished the season at 6-4.
Bryan scored on their opening drive, courtesy of the running of quarterback Zac Nobis.
Nobis carried six times for 41 yards, including the last 18 with 7:40 left in the first to give the Bears a 7-0 lead.
Thanks to Free Canales’ kickoff return out to the 42 the Vikings had a great start, but on the third play Jack Etue fumbled at the 48 and the Bears recovered, setting up another scoring opportunity.
This time it was all senior Davontae Royster four straight times, the final run from four yards out to give Bryan a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
A 31-yard duck that found the hands of Evan Smith when a Viking defender fell down set up Nobis’ 10-yard scoring rumble and Royster scored the last two Bryan touchdowns, one on a pass from Nobis to finalize the win.
After having a better than average chance of making the postseason two weeks ago, Evergreen finished with consecutive losses to end at 4-6, and must look forward to next season, losing just six seniors.
