Area cross country teams advance to Tiffin Regional

Wauseon’s success at the NWOAL Cross Country Championships a week earlier carried over to the Division II district meet at Ottawa Park last Saturday, as their boys team finished second to qualify for the regional meet.

The Indians finished with a score of 86, 36 points behind first place Van Wert, who had 50.

Kyle Vernot and Joshua Lowry placed first and second for Wauseon. Vernot finished the race with a time of 16:20.2, while Lowry came in at 16:36.1.

Michael Cheezan added a ninth place finish (17:31.0) for the Indians, Braden Vernot took 23rd (18:03.7), and Layton Willson 51st (18:45.9).

The Wauseon girls will be represented at the regional meet by Hannah Richer. She finished eighth with a time of 20:53.7.

In the Division II district meet at Owens, the Archbold boys nearly missed qualifying as a team, finishing third behind Eastwood and Genoa.

And although the Blue Streaks had four runners in the top 25, none of them managed to crack the top eight which ended their season.

Brendon Johns finished 13th (18:25.91) for the Streaks, Adam Kinsman was behind him at 14th (18:41.33), Hunter Beaverson took 22nd (19:14.15) and Devin Witte 25th (19:27.61).

Brett Bettinger of Swanton advances with a fourth place finish, running the race in 17:09.7. The Bulldogs’ next best were Garrett Bradish at 23rd (19:15.86) and Tyler Boyd at 26th (19:37.39).

Archbold girls snatch district title

Three county girls teams punched their tickets to the Tiffin Regional at the Division III district at Owens last Saturday, led by Archbold, who was district champion in District 1 with 40 points.

Behind them were Pettisville with 43 points, Carey, who took third with 92 points, and Evergreen, fourth with 104.

Seven of the top 10 runners were from the county. Pettisville’s Nichole Foor won the race with a time of 19:05.

For Archbold, Gwynne Rile took fifth (20:13.63), Dakota Stamm sixth (20:15.15), Kylie Sauder seventh (20:18.23), Brittney Ramirez eighth (20:18.78) and Camryn Hudson 21st (21:54.27).

Elizabeth Sauder of Pettisville came in at third (19:34.27), Kate Stuber finished 13th (20:46.14) for the Blackbirds, Kelly Miller 14th (20:47.1), and Sarah Foor 19th (21:29.99).

Earning a runner-up finish was Sarah Schwan of Evergreen. She finished with a time of 19:16.96.

Next for the Vikings were Kennedy Keller, who placed 12th (20:39.94), Grace Bryson 24th (22:00.19), Katie Fritsch 42nd (23:49.39) and Ashley Garlick 49th (24:17.3).

In the District 2 girls meet, Jenna Hallett of Delta advanced after placing 10th (20:42.64).

Fayette had an athlete qualify for the Tiffin Regional in the District 1 boys race. Brett Merillat placed 10th (18:00.41) to advance.

Thanks to a pair of placements in the top 12, the Delta boys placed fourth as a team to advance in District 2.

Maverick Wright placed fifth (16:55.93) for the Panthers, while Hayden Davis finished 11th (17:18.26).

Nickolas Sherick took 30th (18:26.44), Walker Sniegowski 32nd (18:27.78), and Jarod Kurfiss 42nd (18:57.11).

The Pettisville boys had a pair qualify individually as Max Leppelmeier placed second (16:36.61) and Logan Rufenacht eighth (17:05.52).
