It seems I can go weeks without any particular plans and, because of no plans, I have no interruptions, either. But just let me make plans to do something that the date(s) are not changeable!
That’s this week.
Since this corresponding week a year ago, I have had plans to do the World’s Longest Yard Sale again. You can plan ahead for this because it always begins the first Thursday of August and runs through Sunday. As you suspect from its name, it follows U.S. 127 from Addison, Mich., to Gadsdon, Ala., and features many areas where individual vendors bunch up together so you can shop up to 100 different sales with one stop.
We’ve been shopping this sale for a few years and have watched it change from multitudes of single home sales to bunching up at fairgrounds and other similar venues.
We would leave on Wednesday, drive south to an as yet unspecified location, take the night in a motel, and start out fresh Thursday morning with our shopping. Well, anyway, that was the plan.
Then I was notified of a retreat for all Certified Lay Ministers of the West Ohio Conference. This is a first-ever event and I really want to go, but it is on the Friday evening and Saturday of the 127 sale.
How to do both …
I didn’t want to disappoint my roommate on the 127 Sale trip but I also wanted to attend the retreat. I puzzled over it for a few days, and finally brought it up for discussion. As a result, our plans have now changed.
We will do a portion the sale, mostly in Ohio, and get home in time for me to be ready to leave for the retreat by 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Lawn mowing has to be worked into the schedule, too – both my own and the church lawn. Weeks and weeks with no plans at all, and then everything seems to pile up in one week! How does that happen?
Well, no matter how it happened, that is the rather loosely put together plan of the week. And I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
The 127 Sale is serious business to many people, as antique dealers come from across the nation to see what treasures they can find. To us, it is just one massive yard sale where we may or may not find something of interest. Besides that, it gives us that needed anticipation of something interesting coming up.
We will bump shoulders and exchange greetings with many strangers. Will there be opportunity to be a witness for our Savior? Probably, but that’s something we just have to watch for and be ready to speak and/or act in His behalf.
He calls each of us to be a living, walking, talking example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ wherever we are, even at the World’s Longest Yard Sale.
Watch your life. Others are!
