Let the taste-testing begin, as the 2017 Wauseon Chili Cook-Off and Family Fest is held Saturday, Sept. 23, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in downtown Wauseon.
Chili judging begins 11:30 a.m., with a $400 prize and a plaque going to 1st place – People’s Choice; $300 for second place; and $200 for third place. There will also be Mayor’s and Judge’s Choice Plaque Awards, and a $50 prize for the best-decorated chili booth.
For the price of a hand stamp – $5 for adults and $2 for children 10 and under – visitors will get three tokens to vote for their favorite chili. And a highlight of the event is the “Battle for Bragging Rights” between the Wauseon police and fire departments.
The Chili Cook-Off will include craft and food vendors; free kids’ inflatables from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; a Ronald McDonald meet and greet from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., a free train ride; face painting at 11:15 a.m.; a health screening by the Fulton County Health Department; a Wauseon Fire Department aerial tower and Blaze the Fire Dog; Wauseon police kids’ finger printing and McGruff the Crime Dog; and Tommy Transit and Campbell’s Kids.
