5th graders become math ninjas

Wauseon Elementary School fifth graders became math ninjas Sept. 1 by completing a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activity inspired by the upcoming “Lego Ninjago” movie.

Students in the classes of April Beck, Abby Mouch, and Brenda Waldvogel were encouraged to use geometry, measurement, and engineering skills that provided them with real-world situations that were aligned to Common Core Standards for mathematics and next-generation science standards.

After watching the “Lego Ninjago” movie trailer, the students spent time discussing the inner strengths of loyalty, compassion, and determination, as well as other character traits used in their lives. Next, teamwork, problem solving, and measurement skills were used to help the movie’s characters determine the correct number and size of Lego bricks necessary to build a bridge to carry them safely over a canyon. Students also calculated the area of Lego bricks to help a unlock two enchanted locks.

Finally, they worked in teams to design and build the tallest tower to help keep watch over the city. For this final activity, they became architects, engineers, and master builders, using Lego bricks, marshmallows, uncooked spaghetti, tape, toothpicks, and scissors. Students had 35 minutes to design, plan, build, and test their towers, which had to stand for 30 seconds without falling.

The tallest tower built was created by math ninjas in Brenda Waldvogel’s class. It measured 22.75 inches in height.
