Christopher Lake named new Swanton Local Schools Superintendent

Christopher Lake was approved as the new superintendent of Swanton Local Schools at Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting.

Lake, a Swanton resident for the last 18 years, has served as principal of Tinora High School in Defiance County since 2014. Lake, and his wife Sherry, have two children in the Swanton school district, Wyatt and Mackenzie.

He taught in Perrysburg prior to becoming principal at Tinora.

Lake has a two-year contract and starts at Swanton on Aug. 28. The first day of school is Sept. 7.

The superintendent position became open when Jeff Schlade left for a human resources position at Lakewood Schools in northeast Ohio at the end of July. Jay LeFevre, former Pike-Delta-York superintendent, has since been serving as interim superintendent. A consulting contract with LeFevre was also approved on Wednesday to help Lake transition to superintendent.

Lake enters the district during a building project that will see students in grades 5-8 now at the former Park Elementary School and students in grades K-4 at the former Crestwood Elementary School. Preschool students will be at the high school.

LeFevre and Kevin Young from Munger Munger + Associates gave an update on the project.

Young said Crestwood is in really good shape. Inspections are taking place. The contractor would also like to have messy work, such as pouring footers, completed for the additional two classrooms before school starts in September.

Park School has seen delays but “has come a long way in the last two weeks,” said Young. Final inspections for the choir/band room addition were slated for Monday. Inspections of the lunch room are planned for Aug. 28, at the latest.

At the site on Cherry Street, demolition is complete and materials are now being separated. Materials will be crushed next week to use as backfill.
