Wauseon pedestrian struck by train

Staff report

An 83-year-old Wauseon woman is in stable condition after being clipped by a train Friday at a Fulton Street crossing.

Donna Stemen of Oak Street was struck while walking across the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks at 1:47 p.m. Wauseon Police Chief Keith Torbet said Stemen mistakenly thought a nearby engine that was moving forward at five to 10 miles per hour was stopped on the tracks.

Torbet said, and witnesses confirmed, the train engineer sounded the engine horn in warning before Stemen was hit.

She was transported to the Fulton County Health Center, then life-flighted to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

There are no pedestrian gates at the crossing.
