The Wauseon Board of Education approved a report given at a noon meeting Thursday on financial gains and other improvements made by the school district.
Superintendent Larry Brown told the board the district has “true days” cash – the amount of money available in the general fund to keep the district operational – for 130 days, up to June 30.
“We still are making gains, at least in a positive manner, with our cash reserves, even with the slight increases that we have made,” he said. They included small staff increases in 2015 and 2016.
Recent personnel additions or modifications have included district maintenance support; curriculum aide support; a Wauseon Virtual Academy coordinator; an assistant treasurer; two counselors; a primary/elementary school art teacher; two-hour cafeteria workers through food service funding; one-day assistance through the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center; a district sub-caller; and three restored high school assistant coaches.
Brown also proposed adding a middle school math teacher and a special education director for grades K-12. He said the latter position is currently held by Angie Hill, who is also a district psychologist, and will be separated as an individual position.
In other business, the board members approved the following personnel items: a one-year limited certificated contract to Mallory Carroll as middle school art teacher and to Tiffany Anderson as an elementary school fourth grade teacher, each for the 2017-18 school year, and each pending a clean background check; a one-year classified contract to Cynthia Henson as a primary school two-hour cook; Jenna Gorsuch, and Ashley Hartman pending a clean background check, as classified substitute cooks; Kevin Bechtel as a substitute bus driver; and the resignation of Sherry Suon, the high school principal’s secretary, for the purpose of retirement.
The board also passed a motion to approve the 2017-18 staffing plan, and reviewed a core beliefs list developed for the school district.
