Lions Club holding ‘Stock the Pantry’ contest

Staff report

The Delta-Liberty Lions Club is sponsoring a “Stock the Pantry” food drive contest in cooperation with the Pike-Delta-York and Liberty Center schools’ athletic departments.

Designed to help stock the food pantries in those communities, the contest will be held in conjunction with the Liberty Center High School Track Invite held April 15 at 9 a.m., and the junior varsity and varsity softball/baseball games held April 17 at 5 p.m. People attending the events are asked to bring one or more non-perishable canned or boxed goods to drop off in their choice of separate “P-D-Y” and “LC” boxes.

The donations will be accepted from 9 a.m.-noon at the April 15 event, and from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the April 17 event. Those who don’t attend can drop off donations in advance beginning April 10 to boxes in the high schools’ offices.

Donations to P-D-Y will go to Delta Outreach, and LC donations will go to Caring Cupboard in Liberty Center and Bountiful Blessings at Liberty Chapel Church.

According to Lions Club President Stephen Seagrave, recent government statistics indicate that, for the time in history, more than half of all American school children qualify for the school free lunch program.

For more information about the contest, call Seagrave at 419-822-4884, P-D-Y Athletic Director Chad Smith at 419-822-8247 or Liberty Center Athletic Director Jake Johnson at 419-533-6404.
