Two Fulton County Commissioners attended last week’s Swanton Village Council meeting, and while there got a sneak peek at the village’s new community room. Commissioners and others in attendance walked next door to the community room, located just to the west on Chestnut Street in the former EMS building.
Work is nearing completion as the floor is in and walls are up. Last week, cabinets were also starting to be installed.
Swanton Mayor Ann Roth said that there is a verbal agreement to move Swanton’s Senior Center site to the community room when it is completed. The Swanton site meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
It is estimated that the number of seniors at the Swanton site has doubled over the last couple years.
“We want to thank the Methodist church,” Commissioner Bill Rufenacht said. “The biggest trial there was the stairs.”
Stairs or an elevator are required to get the site at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Main Street. It was added that parking was also a consideration.
The Swanton Rotary Club may also meet at the location. The room will also be available for rental. Terms are still being worked out.
The hope is to have the room completed by June, according to councilman Paul Dzyak.
Village officials also presented commissioners with a request to remove the local liens on the property at 113-115 N. Main St. The building at the site was demolished last year after it had partially collapsed.
“The Village of Swanton believes by releasing these liens the property becomes more desirable for business owners,” said Roth. “Attracting new businesses would be a boost for the village, but also for Fulton County as a whole.”
It was unclear at the meeting whether the commissioners can take any action on the matter.
Rufenacht said, “We will surely look at it and give it every option that we have to try to help out with the situation.”
Village officials will also petition state representatives and Congressman Bob Latta to request help in releasing state and federal liens.
Also related to the demolished building, Commissioner Paul Barnaby announced at the meeting that a staircase had been ordered for the neighboring property. He added that it should be up within two months.
The shared staircase came down during demolition of 113-115 N. Main St. The tenant of a second floor apartment has been using scaffolding to access his home.
