An accident Sunday between tractor-trailers on the Ohio Turnpike led to a second accident that involved five vehicles and sent six people to Toledo hospitals.
The Swanton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that at approximately 5:17 p.m. an eastbound tractor-trailer side-swiped a second tractor-trailer disabled on the turnpike shoulder at milepost 43. The crash closed the right lane and backed up traffic.
At approximately 5:58 p.m., another tractor-trailer traveling eastbound through the congestion failed to yield and struck the rear of a passenger vehicle that was slowed in the traffic. The collision caused a chain reaction between that vehicle and three others.
Five occupants of those vehicles were transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center, and another was air-lifted by Life Flight to The Toledo Hospital, all with serious but non-life threatening injuries. No names were available.
The eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were closed for approximately two hours while the vehicles were removed from the roadway.
No other information was available.
